2019 Samsung Electronics Un40m5300a 40-inch Smart Led Tv Review
Test Results
Blueprint
Curved No
The design of the Samsung M5300 is decent. Information technology looks fairly basic and won't exist the centerpiece of a room, with an all-plastic outside. The stand is broad and may not fit on smaller tables simply feels quite stable. The TV is quite thick and may stick out from the wall a fleck if mounted, and doesn't provide any cablevision management.
The stand is almost as wide of the TV, which may brand it more hard to fit on some tables. It supports the Tv set well though, despite beingness entirely plastic.
Footprint of the 32" Idiot box stand: five.7" x 28.3"
Wall Mount VESA 100x100
A VESA mount is located on the back of the Boob tube for wall mounting. Unfortunately, if placed close to a wall then the component/composite inputs at the back may be difficult to access. There is no cable management on this Tv set.
Borders 0.83" (2.1 cm)
The borders have an average thickness and are fabricated of plastic. There is a slight texture which is squeamish.
Max Thickness 2.68" (six.8 cm)
The Telly appears a chip thicker than average when viewed from the side. It will stick out from a wall a fleck if mounted.
Maximum Temperature 100 °F (38 °C)
Boilerplate Temperature 93 °F (34 °C)
The Goggle box's screen stays adequately cool, but its power brick does get very warm to the touch, upward to 49 °C, though non hot enough to burn you lot.
The build quality of the M5300 is fine. All of the parts are made of plastic, merely in that location are a few prissy textured touches and everything fits together well. The build quality shouldn't exist an issue for normal use.
Picture Quality
Native Contrast 1,294 : 1
Contrast with local dimming N/A
The Samsung M5300 has a below average contrast ratio and when viewed in a dark room, blacks await more grayish than actually black. When set in a room with a practiced lighting, the ambient low-cal helps to negate the low dissimilarity ratio issue and the overall picture quality looks ameliorate. This is very typical of most IPS TVs out there.
Local Dimming No
Backlight Direct
The Samsung M5300 does not have a local dimming characteristic. The video is for reference merely.

Decent brightness, good plenty for a moderately lit room just may appear dim in a bright room. The Television is more dim near the edges, where the real scene brightness is measured, as visible in the Idiot box'due south gray uniformity photograph. The TV's CE dimming dims very night scenes like our two% white window in an endeavour to make the scene darker, but information technology unfortunately dims the highlights as well.

v% DSE 0.106%
The M5300 has a decent gray uniformity with some dirty screen effect. The center of the screen is a chip brighter than the sides and some darker vertical bands are too visible on each side of the center bright spots.
Looking at our 5% gray exam picture, nothing bad can be really noticed, which is practiced, especially for movies with darker scenes.
Color Shift 37°
Brightness 42°
Black Level 75°
Decent viewing bending, even for an IPS panel, and far better than all VA TVs. Blacks stay black, and colors and effulgence remain decent when the Tv set is viewed at moderate angles. This TV would be a proficient choice for a room where people often sit down to the side of the TV and view it at an angle.
Native Std. Dev. 2.682%
Std. Dev. westward/ L.D. N/A
Black uniformity of this Samsung TV is disappointing, but this is non surprising for an IPS Tv set, which tends to always have worse blackness uniformity than about VA TVs. This is visually more striking because of the depression contrast ratio. With the M5300, the nearly visually noticeable part is the flashlighting near the edges of the screen. The center of the screen is also a fleck brighter than the remainder of the screen, and it closely matches the brighter zone that we already noticed on the l% gray uniformity.
Screen Finish Semi-gloss
Total Reflections 5.2%
Indirect Reflections 0.1%
The M5300 is decent at handling reflections. Information technology has a semi-gloss terminate which diffuses reflections across the screen and reduces their intensity merely does issue in a larger reflection footprint. This is fine for virtually rooms but may be an issue in bright rooms.
Picture Way Movie
White Balance dE 3.39
Colour dE 2.55
Gamma 2.25
Color Temperature 6,690 One thousand
Before calibration and when set on the near authentic picture mode and color temperature, in this case, the 'Movie' motion picture way and the 'Warm1' color temperature, the M5300 has a skilful overall accuracy. The white rest dE is just a bit over 3, which at this dE, the inaccuracy is noticeable to enthusiasts, simply for most people should not be a problem. For the colour accurateness, the dE is but of two.55, which should simply exist noticeable to professionals who are used to working with calibrated TVs.
Every bit for the gamma, it is hovering a bit over our desire gamma of 2.2 with only a little bump in the darker IRE, which could make dark scenes a bit darker than what they normally should be.
Notation here that we did use the 'Warm1' on this Goggle box, but this is exceptional, every bit ordinarily, 'Warm2' give us meliorate result than 'Warm1', which is a bit too colder.
Picture Mode Movie
White Balance dE 0.21
Color dE 1.78
Gamma 2.21
Color Temperature 6,509 K
After calibration, the accuracy of the M5300 is first-class. The white residual dE is just of 0.21 which is about perfect since, at this level of accuracy, the imperfections are non noticeable. On the color side, the color dE was brought down to i.78, which is better than before calibration and should be expert for nearly people, except maybe professionals who might exist able to observe slight imperfections in the reds and blues. Equally for gamma, the correction done on the white balance took care of the little crash-land and flattened the gamma curve.
You tin run into our recommended settings here.
Low-quality content such every bit DVDs are upscaled well.
Upscaling of 720p content such every bit cable is good. The image is a bit soft, simply almost no halo artifacts are visible.
Native 1080p content is displayed without any issues.
The Samsung M5300 doesn't support a 4k input.

DCI P3 xy 71.18%
DCI P3 uv 76.64%
Rec 2020 xy 51.07%
Rec 2020 uv 55.85%
Standard colour gamut, good plenty for SDR content using the Rec 709 colour gamut. This gamut wouldn't exist good for HDR content, but this TV doesn't back up HDR anyway.
Normalized DCI P3 Coverage ITP 62.4%
ten,000 cd/grand² DCI P3 Coverage ITP 15.v%
Normalized Rec 2020 Coverage ITP 44.two%
ten,000 cd/g² Rec 2020 Coverage ITP ten.9%
Poor HDR color volume, but this is expected of an SDR-only TV. The volume should be good enough for well-nigh SDR content, but the TV makes dark colors brighter than they should exist because of the Goggle box's mediocre contrast ratio.

Ruddy (Std. Dev.) 0.117

The Samsung M5300 is nifty at displaying our gradient exam image and surprisingly, viii-bit banding is not visible. Some little imperfections tin can exist seen in the darker colors, but this is not really problematic for normal content and is fairly typical of other Samsung TV we accept tested before.

The Samsung M5300 does non suffer from temporary image retention.
Permanent Burn down-In Run a risk No
We don't expect IPS panels to feel permanent prototype retention, as the IPS panel in our long-term test appears immune.
Motility
eighty% Response Time 7.ii ms
100% Response Time fifteen.vii ms
Very adept low motion blur, adept enough for watching fast moving content. The pixel response time is fairly fast, leading to just a short trail following moving objects. Most of the mistiness in the motion-picture show is due to the image flicker. The Goggle box applies just a bit of overdrive to make the response fourth dimension faster without adding much visible overshoot, which is good.
Flicker-Free No
PWM Dimming Frequency 120 Hz
Poor image flicker. The TV simply dims the backlight by using PWM dimming, which introduces more flicker the dimmer the backlight. While this flicker does reduce persistence blur, information technology also produces the double image artifacts visible in the move blur film.
Optional BFI Yeah
Min Flicker for 60 fps 120 Hz
lx Hz for 60 fps No
120 Hz for 120 fps Due north/A
Min Flicker for 60 fps in Game Mode 120 Hz
While the TV does have a BFI setting to reduce persistence mistiness (the 'LED Clear Motion' setting), all information technology does on this TV is cap the brightness so that flicker is e'er nowadays, so it's useless. While the Boob tube's 120 Hz PWM backlight does assist somewhat to make motion look clearer, it's not every bit proficient as threescore Hz flicker similar on the Sony X720E.
Motility Interpolation (30 fps) Yes
Motion Interpolation (60 fps) No
The M5300 is able to interpolate lower frame rate content up to its native 60Hz refresh rate. To do so, set 'Auto Motion Plus' to 'Custom' and increase the 'Judder Reduction' slider.
Frame Hold Time @ 24 fps 26.0 ms
Frame Concord Time @ lx fps 1.0 ms
This Television set is very expert at displaying content without stutter. The response time helps to polish the transition between frames, and so static images are simply shown for a short time - even at depression framerates.
Judder-Free 24p No
Judder-Free 24p via 60p No
Judder-Free 24p via 60i No
Judder-Costless 24p via Native Apps No
The Samsung M5300 can't play 24p movies without judder, and this no thing if the source is 24p, 60p, or 60i. If you are sensitive to judder, you might observe it, but for virtually people, this is usually not a deal breaker.

Low input lag, good enough for most people but it may disappoint more competitive gamers. Game mode has an oddly loftier 51.four ms of input lag, which is significantly higher than movie mode's 35.1 ms when all processing is disabled (motility interpolation, noise reduction, etc), which seems similar a problems. PC manner fortunately ever has low input lag. Nosotros highly recommend not using game mode, and instead using moving picture manner with processing disabled or using PC mode.
Nosotros had some issues during testing, read more about them in our Boosted Review Notes.

Only basic resolutions are supported, because the TV has a 1080p @ 60 Hz panel. 4:4:4 colour is only shown properly in PC way (when the HDMI input'due south icon is set to PC). PC mode does not work for some input refresh rates (such as 24 Hz); the icon still changes to PC but the settings that are normally disabled in PC way are not disabled, and iv:4:4 color is not shown properly.

Bad frequency response. The M5300'southward very small speakers cannot reproduce low frequencies well, making the Boob tube'southward sound disappointingly thin and tinny. The Tv'south unbalanced response significantly deteriorates the experience of most content.

Advanced Options Many
The TV's interface is centered effectually the Smart Hub, which gives admission to all other settings. This makes navigating the interface easy to sympathise for new users, while more advanced users can utilise the remote'south extra buttons to go direct to the setting they want. Overall, the interface is the aforementioned as all other 2017 Samsung TVs, but some animations are more stuttery and the Television has a bug where it sometimes will show a black screen and needs to be turned off or sometimes unplugged before it becomes usable once more. This problems hopefully isn't present on all units and it may be stock-still with a firmware update.

Opt-out of Suggested Content No
The TV didn't show any ads during testing, however, ads on Samsung TVs are ofttimes inconsistent. Because all Samsung TVs since 2016 accept had ads, and ads were visible on many 2017 models we tested, it can be assumed that this Telly has ads.
